Our coat of arms illustrates the values and virtues we are committed to living out in our spousal union. We hope that future generations will also be drawn to uphold these principles as we begin to build the domestic church, our family.
ELEMENTS
- The paschal lamb represents Christ, the sacrificial Lamb of God. It symbolizes humility, obedience, and purity – each of which is necessary in our relationship with one another and with God.
- The modified anchor highlights the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity. These are signified by the cross, anchor, and heart respectively, and are the fundamental elements of our Christian family life.
- The interlocking rings denote the sacrament of holy matrimony and the vows of love and fidelity that will underpin our relationship. The rings are also treated to resemble an infinity symbol, illustrating the lifelong commitment to one another as husband and wife.
- The boat with its net cast overboard recalls Christ’s command to put out into the deep water (Luke 5:4). The icon is both emblematic of our need to trust in God, as well as our call to mission – just as the first disciples laid down their nets to follow Christ (Matthew 4:20).
- The boat’s sail reads JMJ, a dedication to the Holy Family – Jesus, Mary, and St. Joseph. Just as a sail uses the wind to propel a boat forward, so too do we rely on the example of the Holy Family to guide us through motherhood, fatherhood, and family life.
- Surrounding the coat of arms are rose branches in honour of our intercessors, Mary, the Mystical Rose, and St. Thérèse of Lisieux, the Little Flower and patron of missionaries. The thorns represent the challenges of life which are made both bearable and beautiful through the hope of its rose, that is, the reward of Heaven.
MOTTO
Love conquers all encapsulates the truth that grounds our relationship – that love, who is God himself, will always prevail. This serves as a reminder for us to do all things with, for, and through Love.
